Benjy Kent, Varsity Head Coach
Benjy is a St. Louis Park High School graduate (’83) who was a member of the All-State Soccer Team his senior year. He then played soccer at the University of Wisconsin for two years, followed by several years of overseas play in Europe and Israel. Benjy won several amateur state championships as a player. He also played professionally for the Portland Firebirds in Oregon.
Benjy has completed his D, C, and B U.S. Soccer Federation (USSF) Coaching Licenses. He has coached for over 35 years across the country, primarily at the high school level, but also including three seasons at Augsburg College, an NCAA Division III school. Benjy joined the St. Louis Park Girls’ High School soccer team as the Varsity Coach in 2001.
Education & Professional Background
Benjy holds a B.A. in Psychology and History from the University of Wisconsin and an M.A. in Counseling from the University of Oregon. He worked for 21 years as the Director of Academic Advising and Achievement at Augsburg College and also taught at St. Catherine’s University. He is now in private practice as a parent and family coach working primarily with families in conflict (divorcing or divorced) struggling with issues around launching, education and activities.
Benjy and his wife, Chris (also a college soccer player and coach), live in St. Louis Park with their three kids who all, of course, play soccer! Benjy loves outdoor sports, including running marathons, mountain climbing and running rivers in places like the Cascades. Most recently, his busy life has lent itself toward cycling. Benjy commutes to work on his bike and has done many 100+ mile rides around the country. Most recently, he has gotten back to playing more basketball and continues to work on his 3 point shot (66%, unguarded).
